How Decluttering Boosts Mental Health:
Feeling a sense of fulfillment and clarity after decluttering isn’t just a coincidence. In fact, plenty of research out there suggests that clutter has a real impact on mood.
One study published in the Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin determined that clutter sometimes translates to a homeowner feeling more depressed (especially if visitors make a comment about how messy it is). Other studies have found that because clutter creates the effect of increased stimuli in ones environment, it makes it harder to focus on the task at hand.
