How your food choices really Affect Your Mood : GlitterU.com | Heather Newman Fitness

If you've found yourself here, I'm sure you are struggling with your mood, your stress level and mindset...especially during this season we are ALL GOING THRU. Anxiety will peak if we let it. But here is the GOOD NEWS my friend.....THERE IS A WAY TO CONTROL IT ALL and keep a sense of normalcy.

Hey....off subject, I know a lot of us are struggling mentally trying to navigate all of this MIND BLOWING WORLD STUFF RIGHT NOW......... I personally wanted to SHARE my favorite GO TO SCRIPTURES and the most personalized prayer that you can print out and start speaking every morning and every night to FIND PEACE with you. These will help you DE STRESS!! Let me know if you like these, they are truly what GETS ME THRU THIS CHAOS.......

Ok, after you get those things in line, we can now focus on the topic of today's post. "How FOOD affects your Mindset" (and your mood) Why you should really pay attention to what you put in your body. Do you want to feel better? Do you want to be more energetic?? Do you struggle with fatigue? Do you struggle with motivation? Do you have foggy mind?? Can you focus?

Ok, I could totally NERD out on you right now and tell you this:

"The connection between carbohydrates and mood is all about tryptophan, a nonessential amino acid. As more tryptophan enters the brain, more serotonin is synthesized in the brain, and mood tends to improve. ... Foods thought to increase serotonin levels in the brain include fish and vitamin D."

but....let's be honest, nobody really cares about all the fluff - especially when you are dealing with KEEPING A POSITIVE MINDSET! So, let's talk real talk while keeping this blog post as short and sweet as possible....

I want to share a piece of my book with you here (page 17) When you eat sugar, your brain releases dopamine, the chemical that makes you feel happy! I bring up SUGAR because it's addictive! I know, trust me! When we go to the boxes of "so called food" in the pantry - it's got sugar in it - even if they are not OBVIOUS SUGARS - there are plenty of hidden sugars in our foods - read the labels!

When you are NOT eating sugar you may notice that you are not getting the same "pick-me-up" feeling from your afternoon snack. WE REACH FOR THE SUGARS to perk us up when we feel down - they provide a quick (non lasting) feeling of happy (MOOD)!

I go over all the details in my book "7-Day Sugar Detox" how SUGAR REALLY is the devil. I hope you'll take the time one day to try my workbook, journal, recipes and guide. It's really super easy to follow and I've helped so many find a way to balance their everyday lifestyle of CRAVING ALL THINGS......to a sense of balance. They resort to the book as a way to RESET THEIR MIND and their body when they fall off track and that is what I intended to do by publishing it.

I've always said SUGAR IS THE DEVIL. And yes, I was a complete chocoholic (i still love dark chocolate) - that is why I wrote a book to help with sugar addiction and the sugar funk (slump & moody vibes). Sugar is an addiction! Just like drugs and alcohol. And although we might not think of sugar as a really bad thing because it tastes soooooo dang good...it is the silent killer. It' pulls our mood and minds into a funk and the body stores it - our bodies do not need nor know how to process sugars!

If you are anything like me, you are so over sugar running your life and you want to become the healthiest version of yourself. I know, it's not easy to kill the sugar bug but we can atleast try to be aware of how much we consume and find a way to allow it in moderation thru the right sources (fruit only - and i say fruit before 4pm). This allows our body time to burn through those natural sugars.

Cutting sugar from your diet gradually (which is what I teach you in my book) may help lesson the intensity of your symptoms (headaches, etc...) , but it also means those symptoms (detoxing sugar) will stick around longer. By cutting out sugar at once, your body will become used to living and functioning better without it sooner, which means a faster end to any withdrawal (moody ###) symptoms. How long can you go without sugar? A day? Two days? how long? Have you ever really tried to challenge your body?

My Sugar Detox guide is a great starting point for a new and improved lifestyle. It's an excellent investment into resetting your metabolism and retraining our thoughts on food and how it really nourishes our body.

Excess sugar plays a role in obesity, but it's also been implicated in a number of chronic conditions that have serious impacts on health and quality of life. Too much sugar consumption has been linked to type 2 diabetes, heart disease and dementia. In one study, researchers discovered the sugar actually fueled the growth of cancer cells.

A few tips I share in my book:

Step 1 - do not drink your calories - drink water, water and more water. Nothing added. Just water. You should be consuming 1/2 of your body weight in ounces per day.

PLAIN WATER - coffee and tea do not count as water. (Ever notice how BLAH you feel after a soft drink or a really have sugar drink. It sits in your belly like a ton of bricks).

So if you weigh 200 pounds, you should be drinking 100 ounces of water every day.

Step 2 - The sugar purge - Out with the old. We have to set you up for success by cleaning out your cabinets and fridge. When the cravings hit, it's super hard to stay strong if you know you have candy, cake and cookies hanging out in the kitchen somewhere. Toss out anything that is not going to help you gain control of your moods and sugar highs/lows. Just toss it.

Step 3 - The good fats - they are your friend!!

So many people think all fats are bad fats....NOPE. Healthy fat is actually really good for your mood and keeping you fuller longer. It also shrinks your cravings and keeps your blood sugar and insulin levels balanced.

Some of my favorite healthy fats (in small portions)

avocado

nut butters

avocado oil

fish

nuts

seeds

coconut oil

My book is super easy to follow with a plug and play style menu and recipes that will keep you FEELING SATISFIED, HAPPY AND ENERGETIC without eating all the ####!!! It's good for any age and every lifestyle!

Remember every time you go to put something into your mouth - ask yourself - how is this fueling my body. Think of your body as a CAR. Do you want to be a LEXUS or do you want to be an old clunker? I want to be the LEXUS so i'm going to try my hardest to always give it premium fuel (aka good natural food) - You wouldn't put funky fuel into a new shiny LEXUS!!! So respect your body the same way. FOOD IS FUEL!! MAKE SURE YOU ARE CONSUMING PREMIUM FUEL. You are worth it. Your health and mind are worth it.
